What is an operating system?
A software that runs on a computing device and manages the hardware and software components that make up a functional computing system
What are the 3 major OS?
Microsoft Windows, Apple MacOS, and Linux
What is a release cycle?
Operating systems and software updates that come on a periodic basis
What is a maintenance/life cycle?
When vendors only support older version of software for a certain period of time before not offering any updates
What is virtualization?
Where one machine can host dozens or even hundreds of virtual machines
What does beta mean?
When a software release has many features but hasn’t been tested
What does stable mean?
When the software release has been tested in the field
What is backward compatibility?
Refers to the ability of later operating systems to be compatible with software made for earlier versions
MACOS is based on the software from?
FreeBSD project
How do Linux users obtain an operating system?
By downloading a distribution
What is a distribution?
A bundle of software, comprised of the Linux kernel, utilities, management tools,etc.
What do distributions include?
Tools to manage the system, a package manager to add or remove software and update the programs to provide security
What are the two types of Linux distribution?
Enthusiast and enterprise
What is a enthusiast distribution
Has a fast cycle
Not supported for enterprise
May not contain features in the next version that are in the current one
Example of enthusiast distribution?
OpenSuse Tumbleweed
What is an enterprise distribution?
They take care to be stable and consistent and offer support for extended periods from 5-13 years
Examples of enterprise distribution
Red hat and canonical
What is LTS?
Long term support
How does a CLI works?
Text based interface. You type commands in the terminal which then passes it on to a shell that interprets the commands into instructions that is executed by the OS
What is REDHAT?
Linux distribution
Fedora project
REDHAT package manager
What is SUSE?
Originally derived from Slackware and of the first distributions of Linux
Similar to REDHAT
What is Debian?
A community effort and promotes the use of open source software and adherence to standards
Ubuntu
What is CentOS?
A Linux distribution that is compatible with RELH but does not offer the paid support that REDHAT does
What is Linux Mint?
A Linux distribution that is a derivative of Ubuntu and still relies on its repositories
