Network Media
a storage device used to copy a file from 1 device 2 another AKA sneakernet.
Node
any device able to connect to the network
Network Components
WAP, Firewalls, Switches, Hubs, Clients, & Routers
Cables & Media
Fiber Optics, Coaxial cable, phone lines, Cat 5e & 6e, & Wireless Radio
What do networks do
sharing and accessing data, communicate via email, message, & phone, stream contents (video), internet & web access wired/wireless access.
Network medium
media
Client
a user with a workstation having access to the network for its resources by any wired or mobile device.
Server
a local or remote network sharing its resources such as printers, files, voice, video, & data.
Switch & Hub
Hub no longer in use due to flooding the network. Switches send traffic to its rightful destination by knowing connected devices.
WAP
connect wireless nodes to wired or wireless networks
Router
a device that connect different networks together and forwards packet to its designated network.
Local Area Network - LAN
a network able to connect and talk to devices in a small geographic area
Wide Area Network - WAN
connects LANs over large distances.
Wireless LAN & WAN
same as LAN & WAN but wireless
Metropolitan Area Network - MAN
> a LAN and incorporates both LANs & WANs like a city block network.
Campus Area Network - CAN
a College or military network consisting of large switches and high speeds LANs.
Storage Area Network - SAN
high speed server and storage network
Personal Area Network - PAN
used to connect peripheral devices via Bluetooth
Bits & Bytes
1 bit is a 1 or 0. 1 byte is a string of 8 bits of 1 & 0. Data speeds measured in bits while storages are measured in bytes.
Packet
Contains a payload of bytes
Ethernet
IEEE 802.3 standard a protocol (family) supporting different media & data
Media Access Control - MAC
is a physical address on the network interface card it does not change 1st 1/2 is OEM number the last half is the unique ID
Cycle Redundancy Check - CRCC
make sure all bits are there
Hub
a repeater sends all traffic to all hosts
