25
Switch
sends traffic to the designated receiver by keeping a MAC address table of devices connected and with current traffic
26
Unicast
a frame going from 1 sender to 1 receiver
27
Multicast
> 1 sender & multiple receivers delivering the same transmission
28
Broadcast Domain
is a logical group of devices in the same broadcast traffic or (LAN Segment). Router are the border police for broadcast domains.
29
Internet Protocol (IP)
is the protocol of the internet IPv4 & now IPv6. Part of the TCP/IP stack
30
Internet Engineering Task Force - IETF
the different network of personnel concerned with the evolution of the internet
31
Address Resolution Protocol - ARP
ARP is used to find out the MAC address when the IP address of the destination is known.
32
ARP Cache
a temporary table containing a list of IP address matched with their MAC address
33
Gratuitous ARP
New connected host would send and ARP announcement with their IP & MAC address so other devices know.
34
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - DHCP
used to assign host with IP address or to find out the IP address of a host with known MAC address which took over Reverse ARP & BOOTP.
35
Ethernet Segmentation
a connection between devices on the same wire like a T.
36
Collision Domain
when devices are connected to the same wire and their frames collide at the conjunction (T).
37
Carrier Sense Multiple Access w/ Collision Detection - CSMA-CD
used to prevent ethernet collision it is embedded in the Ethernet. Nodes listen on the wire for no noise or collision to then transmit. If collision occurs it will retransmit.
38
Duplex
node able to both listen & talk on the wire
39
1/2 Duplex
a node/device can either listen or send information
40
Full Duplex
a node/device can simultaneous listen and send information
41
Duplex mismatch
When the duplexes don't match on any of the devices
42
Copper Unshielded Twisted Pair - UTP
copper wired cables used for areas with a lot of electromagnetic fields
43
Fiber Optics Cables
Are light/optical based cables with multimode. Core is glass made & really small. No EMI.
44
Types of Fiber Optic cables
Straight Tip Connection - ST Standard Connection - SC Lucent Connection - LC
45
Unshielded Twisted Pair - UTP
single or multiple cables twisted together
46
Shielded Twisted Pair - STP
Metal shielding cable 2 reduce emission from cable & electromagnetic radiation.
47
Snips
4 cutting wire
48
Wire Strippers
4 striping back jackets & clamping wires
49
Telco/Network Crimper
crimp down jacks unto cables.
50
Cable- Tester
Tests the wiremap and continuity of the wire.
51
Time Domain Reflectometer - TDR & OTDR - Optical
identifies the distance of a cable to a breaking point.
52
Punch Down Tool
4 punching down twisted pair cable into punch blocks, patch panels, & jacks.
53
Toner & Probe Aka Fox & hounds
a device that create a tone in the cable and later probe/detect the tone to find the cable.
54
Multimeter
used to test the voltage on power outlets and on wire & pins 4 continuity
55
Cable Certifier
4 both copper & optical wires it is used to certify wires are in crosstalk standard as well as other industry standards.
56
Bit Error Rate Tester - BERT
tests the quality of signal transmission across a circuit detects any errors and keeps track.
57
Plenum cables
rated cable where there are open forced air return such as dropped ceiling or raised floors.
58
Cable Tray
trays that hold cables
59
Main Distribution Frame - MDF
primary equipment room that holds server tower.
60
Intermediate Distribution Frame - IDF
Telecommunication closet equipment room 2 that holds switches/small servers.
61
Demarc
is the internet service provider section that holds modem/router
62
Demarc Point
Punch block or patch panel
63
Demarc Extension
the ISP equipment section
64
Patch Panel
A unit having several jacks connecting and routing circuits for monitoring & testing.
65
Jacks
wall jacks that can be made for any cable connector.
66
Uninterruptible Power Supply - UPS
provides alternative back up power
67
Console Port
Used to configure network devices like Router. Switches, firewalls, etc...
