Module 2 - Cell Injury, Adaption & Cell Death Flashcards
1
Q
List causes/agents of cell injury and give examples of each.
A
- Physical Agents - Trauma, radiation, excessive, temperatures, changes in pressure.
- Chemical Agents - Air pollutants, CO, pesticides, poisons, drugs.
- Nutritional/Metabolic Alterations - Nutrient deficiencies or excesses, ischemia, hypoxia.
- Immune Reactions - Allergens, autoimmune disease.
- Genetic Defects - Single mutations (AA substitution in Hb in sickle cell disease, chromosomal abnormalities - trisomy 21/Down syndrome
- Cellular Aging - Loss of intrinsic repair mechanisms; repeated healing/repair following external injuries.
2
Q
Define atrophy.
A
Reduction in size.
3
Q
Define hypertrophy.
A
Increase in cell size.
4
Q
Define hyperplasia.
A
Increase in cell number.
5
Q
Define dysplasia
A
Disorganized/disorderly growth of cells.
6
Q
Define metaplasia.
A
Change from one adult cell type to another.
7
Q
Define lipofuscin.
A
Phospholipids, “wear and tear”, increases with age.
8
Q
Define melanin.
A
Black-brown pigment found in skin and certain brain cells.
9
Q
Define hemosiderin.
A
Iron-rich brown rich pigment from breakdown of RBCs.
10
Q
Fatty change/intracellular accumulation of fat may be due to?…
A
- Increased delivery of fat to the cell (diabetes, starvation).
- Impaired fat metabolism (liver cells due to alcoholism).
- Decreased synthesis of apolipoprotein transport proteins (protein malnutrition).
