Renaissance
the word Renaissance means “rebirth” and refers to the period that followed Europe’s middle ages
What were Italy’s main trade cities?
Florence, Genoa, Milan, and Venice
What was the most significant trade city and why?
Florence, the city was already rich because of wool trade and bankers, but the Medici family came in and started to rule Florence, the family was very rich so they redesigned many buildings and painted palaces, they also created many areas for education
Humanism
the study of the humanities led to a new way of thinking and learning
Dante Alighieri
a poet, he started writing in Italian which influenced many other people to write in common languages
Niccolo Machiavelli
an Italian writer and politician, he gave leaders advice on how to rule
Petrarch
an Italian poet, he had a lot to say about human behavior, some believe that humanism would not have developed without Petrarch’s ideas
Perspective
a method of showing a three dimentoinal scene on a flat surface so that it looks real
Michelangelo
one of the greatest Italian artists, he designed buildings, wrote poetry, carved sculptures, and painted pictures
Leonardo de Vinci
the greatest genius that has ever lived, sculptor, painter, architect, inventor, and engineer, his greatest works is a painting of the last supper, and the Mona Lisa
Johann Gutenberg
a German man, who developed the printing press
Christian humanism
the resulting combination of humanist and religious ideas
Desiderius Erasmus
a Dutch priest, he believed in the idea that humans had free will
Albrecht Durer
a famous northern artist from Germany, he studied anatomy so he could paint people better, he drew a lot of nature scenes
Miguel de Cervantes
he wrote a story in Spanish, and poked fun at romantic tales of the Middle Ages
William Shakespeare
the greatest writer in the English language, wrote poems and plays, he wrote more than 30 comedies, tragedies, and histories
Why did the Renaissance spread beyond Italy?
the printing press allowed more books to be made which created a better education, more people become interested in grammar, the bible gets translated into English
