Module 3 Flashcards
A constant is:
A number with a fixed value
What is a variable?
A symbol that represents or holds the place of a numerical value.
What is a coefficient?
A number by which a variable is being multiplied: for example 16 in 16a
What is an algebraic expression?
A string of terms (6a, 7x, 6ab) connected by division, addition, and subtraction.
When writing algebraic expressions, what goes first?
The terms with the largest exponents
What are inverse operations?
Operations that undo one another. Such as addition is the inverse of subtraction
What is the degree of an expression?
The largest exponent in an expression
i.e. 3x^2; the degree is 2
An expression of degree 0 is known as:
a constant; such as 12
An expression of degree 1 is known as:
linear; such as 12a
An expression of degree 2 is known as:
quadratic
An expression of degree 3 is known as :
cubic
What is a linear equation?
An algebraic equation with a degree of 1 (none of the terms have an exponent larger than 1.) or a square root symbol
When solving for a variable when both sides are equal, where does the number with the variable go?
On the left
y = mx + b is what?
A slope-intercept form, where m is the slope of the line and b is the y intercept
How do you write less than, greater than in 3 forms?
(; );
o
