What are the patterns of development in writing?
Definition, Exemplification, Case and Effect, Process Analysis
This pattern answers the question “what does it mean?” and explains the information using illustrations, examples, and descriptions. It makes the meaning of a word or idea clear by using simple and understandable language.
Definition
What are the types of definition?
Synonym, Intensive definition, Extensive definition
this type uses the synonymous word to define a term.
Synonym
This defines a term/word with this pattern: word + class + distinguishing feature
Intensive definition
extends the one-sentence definition by amplifying it into a paragraph
Extensive definition
This pattern presents the general statements and then provides specific and concrete examples to expound the main idea. It uses examples and/or illustrations to show, explain, or prove a point.
Exemplification
This pattern answers the questions” what is the cause of something? and/or what is the effect of something?” and talks about the cause, which makes something happen, and an effect, which is what happens because of something.
Cause and effect
This pattern gives step-by-step instructions on how to make something. It answers the questions “how is something done?” or “how does something work?”
Process analysis
