Module 3: Storage Systems, Storage Networks And Protocols Flashcards

1
Q

Types of storage systems

A

Block Storage - Breaks up data into singular blocks of data and then stores these blocks as separate pieces of data.
File Storage - Stores data in the form of files and provides file sharing capabilities to clients
Object Storage - stores data in a special form called objects
Unified Storage - Combines block and file storage in a single platform.

Q

NAS

A

Enables users to use systems as although they are on the same system through mounted drives.
Provided file based data storage.

File Virtualisation. Can be abstracted from the storage using a Global Namespace (such as dfs).

Q

NFS

A

NFS is used for LINUX and uses exporting to provide access.
Exported filesystems must be mounted (usually Linux).
Permissions are Linux based

Q

SMB Protocol (CIFS)

A

Windows Based windows sharing.
SMB provides access to remote computers
Uses AD for file permissions on the folder level.

Q

Netapp ONTAP storage architecture

A

Has logical and physical layers

Physical layers are disks, combined into Aggregates

Logical Layer is volumes, files, LUNs and namespaces provided by Storage Virutal Machines (SVM).
