Module 4 Flashcards
What are the two dating methods
Relative and chronometric
What is relative dating
An estimation of a time not an exact number
What is chronometeric dating
Calendar dating or having an exact number to place on a calendar
What are the three laws of archeological stratigraphy
Law of Superposition, Law of Original horizontality and the law of original continuity in order
What are the five chronometric techniques?
Dendrochronology, Radiocarbon dating, thermoluminescence/luminescence, obsidian hydration dating,Archaeomagnetic dating
What is Dendrochronology
Using a tool to count wood rings to find a date
What is radiocarbon dating?
Using the fact that organic materials are radioactive and using that decay to see how old it is
What is thermoluminescence/luminescence
Used for pottery looks at the minerals to see the moment the pottery was fired
What is obsidian hydration dating
Looking at how much water has dissipated in obsidian to see how old it is
What is archaeomagnetic dating
Used for clay lined hearths they found that the earths magnetic pull changes over time using this they can figure out how old the hearth was
