Outline the purpose of religious celebrations, events, rituals and practices
- they express religious truths, beliefs and teachings
- enable people to express and support their religious faith
- e.g. when Christians attend worship services on Sundays, expresses the Christian belief that humans are created to relate to God in loving ways
What is the purpose of the Easter Vigil?
The Easter Vigil is a celebration of the good news of salvation, that good has overcome evil and sin.
Service of light
the Vigil often starts with blessing of the Easter fire and the lighting of the Paschal Candle
- Paschal Candle symbolises risen Christ
- carried into the darkened church
- symbolises light of Christ overcoming darkness and victory over sin and death
Liturgy of the Word
multiple scripture readings that recount key events of salvation throughout history from the creation
* among these is the chanting of Exsultet - a hymn of praise celebrating the Resurrection
Baptismal Liturgy
- Easter Vigil is a traditional time for Baptism
- often includes initiation of catechumens into the Church through Baptism, Confirmation and first Holy Communion
- symbolises their spiritual rebirth and incorporation of the body of Christ
Eucharistic Celebration
- the faithful partake in the Body and Blood of Christ
- this communion meal underscores the unity of the Church and the ongoing presence of Christ among his people
