role of culture in health care
impact is significant, influences how illness is perceived and experienced, what symptoms are reported, what remedies are sought, who is consulted in the process
race vs. ethnicity
race= human population distinguished as a more or less distinct group by genetically transmitted physical characteristics ethnicity= place of history, language, and culture in the construction of identity
what is marginalization
confining people to an outer limit or edge and thus view them as somehow different from the norm
what is a minority
minority group status= not about the mathematical percentage of the population, it is about being disadvantaged, underprivileged and discriminated against
visible minority=
persons, other than aboriginal peoples, who are non-caucasian or non-white in colour
define culture=
- “the set of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features of society or a social group [which] encompasses, in addition to art and literature, lifestyles, ways of living together, value systems, traditions and beliefs”
hatrick and varcoe (2015) define culture as contextual… meaning?
culture is most commonly defined as the values, beliefs, attitudes and practices of particular groups
- these definitions of culture arise from multiple contexts
- different people experience and embody different contexts
- encompasses differences in experience
