TWO FORMS OF MOVEMENT
LOCOMOTOR AND NON-LOCOMOTOR MOVEMENTS
body movement that move the body from one place to another
LOCOMOTOR
8 MAIN LOCOMOTOR MOVEMENTS
- WALKING
- RUNNING
- JUMPING
- HOPPING
- SKIPPING
- LEAPING
- SLIDING
- GALLOPING
shifting one’s weight from one foot to the other. Series of steps, weight is transferred from heel to toe.
WALKING
moving with longer strides in faster speed than walking. Weight carried forward on the ball of the foot.
RUNNING
springing on one foot/both feet and landing on both feet. (bend knees slightly when landing to absorb shock of landing)
JUMPING
springing on one foot and landing on the same foot.
HOPPING
done with a step and a hop using the same foot. A fast step hop.
SKIPPING
springing on one foot and landing on the other foot. (wide stride)
LEAPING
done by gliding on the floor, sideward, or forward using the right/left foot alternately.
SLIDING
stepping on one foot and cutting the other (either sideward/forward)
GALLOPING

3 UNEVEN LOCOMOTOR MOVEMENTS
- SKIPPING
- SLIDING
- GALLOPING
also called axial movements. These are done in place without causing the body to travel. Often combined with locomotor.
NON-LOCOMOTOR MOVEMENTS
7 NON-LOCOMOTOR MOVEMENTS
- BENDING/FLEXING
- STRETCHING/EXTENDING
- LIFTING/RAISING
- TWISTING
- ROTATING/ENCIRCLING
- SWINGING
- SWAYING
moving the muscles around a joint where two body parts meet.
BENDING/FLEXING
done by straightening/extending any part of the body from the joints. Extension or hyperextension of joints.
STRETCHING/EXTENDING
elevating part of the body (usually arms and legs).
LIFTING/RAISING
moving a part of the body around a long axis, from head and body.
TWISTING
pendular movement below an axis in a circular fashion around a stationary center.
SWINGING
done by moving a part of the body around the axis.
ROTATING/ENCIRCLING
pendular movement above an axis.
SWAYING
when a child handles some kind of play object with hands, but can also involve feet. (ex. Tambourines, castanets, hats, sticks, rings, etc.)
