Module 5 part 1 - remembering Flashcards
(11 cards)
memory definition
an active information processing system that receives, organises, stores and recovers information through the processes of encoding, storage and retrieval
what is memory encoding
the process through which information from the senses is converted into a form that can be stored and represented in memory
what is memory storage
the retention of information over time
what is memory retrieval
accessing and recovering stored information for reuse
Atkinson and Shiffrin’s multi store model (1968)
represents memory as consisting of three separate components of called the sensory, short term and long term memory
what is sensory memory
is the entry point of memory where incoming sensory information is stored for a very brief period
what is iconic memory + theory
the brief sensory memory for incoming visual information 0.2-0.4 seconds
-sperling (1960)
showed 12 letters for 1/20th of a second, most could only recall 4 or 5 letters
what is echoic memory + theory
the brief sensory memory for incoming auditory information 3-4 seconds
-cowan et al (2000)
short term memory
a memory system with limited storage capacity in which information is stored for a relatively short time unless renewed
when you pay attention to info in sensory memory, it has entered STM
STM memory duration + theory
12-18 seconds
-peterson & peterson (1959)
participants given trigrams and given a distractor then asked to recall, after 18 sec no one could remember
