basic belief
a belief that is epistemically foundational
indubitability
a proposed quality of some propositions such that denying the would entail logical incoherence
dubitability
quality of some propositions such that denying them would not entail logical incoherence
certainty
an objective quality of propositions, where the subject believes without a doubt that a belief corresponds with objective reality.
isolation
the opposite of certainty; where the proposition is disconnected from objective reality.
foundationalism
a type of epistemology that states one proposition can have other propositions build on top of it.
Mathematical Certainty
While working as an engineer for the military in the Dutch Republic, Descartes discovered analytical geometry. In developing this new form of geometry, Descartes became intimately familiar with the notion of mathematical proofs.
Method of Doubt
Subjecting all of one’s beliefs to Cartesian Skepticism, and recognizing any beliefs that remain are philosophical ordeal.
Cartesian Skepticism
Compromised of the Dream Argument and the Evil Demon argument.
