MODULE 6- CULTURAL, SOCIAL AND POLITICAL INSTITUTIONS Flashcards
(9 cards)
The three types of kinship are:
- Consanguineal
- Affinal
- Social
This kinship is BASED ON BLOOD OR BIRTH: the relationship between parents and children as well as siblings. This is the
MOST BASIC AND UNIVERSAL TYPE OF KINSHIP. Also known as a PRIMARY KINSHIP, it involves people who are DIRECTLY RELATED
Consanguineal
This kind of kinship is where INDIVIDUALS NOT CONNECTED BY BIRTH OR MARRIAGE may still have a bond of kinship according to Schneider. Its difference from consanguineal and affinal is that it has “the ability to terminate absolutely the relationship” without any legal recourse.
Social
This kinship is BASED ON MARRIAGE. The relationship between husband and wife is also considered a basic form of kinship.
Affinal
The importance of kinship in tribal/rural societies can be understood from the
following discussion by Faridi, Rashid (2019):
- Kinship and its Relation to Rural Family, Property and Land
- Kinship and Marriage
- Kinship and Rituals
- Kinship is playing an important role in the field of politics,
The PRIME PROPERTY OF ANY RURAL FAMILY IS LAND. So, land is related to all the kin members of the family.
Kinship and its Relation to Rural Family, Property and Land
Usually, the RURAL PEOPLE ARE MORE SERIOUS AND STRICT IN OBSERVING THE RULES RELATED TO MARRIAGE.
Kinship and Marriage
The role and importance of the kin members lies in the degree of close relationships among them. Their
IMPORTANCE CAN BE SEEN DURING THE OCCASIONS, SUCH AS CRADLE CEREMONY, MARRIAGE, AND DEATH.
Kinship and Rituals
They play a part especially in RURAL ELECTIONS to Panchayati Raj Institutions. Favoritisms, while distributing jobs, is being observed among the kins-men. Due to the emergence of such new forces, kinship may acquire new structure and form.
