Module2 Flashcards
(45 cards)
The lightest form of framing with studs and corner posts in continuous lengths from floor to roof. Ribbons support the second-story joists. Lacks rigidity and may sway in heavy winds.
Balloon Frame
Modified braced frame with lighter timbers and less mortising.
Combination Frame
Studs are only one story high. Each story’s floor joists rest on the top plates of the story below.
Platform Frame
Used for temporary framing. Made by lapping and nailing pieces together. Weak joint.
Plain Joint / Lap joint
Pieces meet at full thickness. Toe-nailed for perpendicular alignment.
Butt or Square Joint
This type of joint is made when the two pieces do not meet at right angles, e.g.
bracings. One piece is cut at an angle to fit the other and the two pieces nailed securely
together.
Oblique Joint
Joins timber ends with scabs or fishplates to maintain alignment and prevent buckling.
Spliced or Scabbed Joint
Joins timber ends by beveling, chamfering, or notching. Used in compression and tension applications.
Scarf Joint
Provides strength and rigidity. Made by inserting a tenon into a mortise.
Mortise and Tenon Joint
Cuts half the thickness from each piece to join ends. Ensures a level surface.
Halved Joint
Shoulder or edge cut to receive another piece. Used in window, door frames, and drawers.
Rabbet Joint
Groove cut at right angles to grain. Groove provides strength to hold the piece.
Dado Joint
Finish joint for corners, usually cut at 45° angles. Secured with nails, clamps, or glue.
Miter Joint
Strong joint used in furniture. Shaped like a _____ to interlock pieces.
Dovetail Joint
Fits one piece of molding at right angles to another. Used for molding connections.
Coped Joint
Squared ends joined with scabs or fishplates to prevent buckling.
Scabbed or Fished Splice
Cuts half the thickness of each piece. Suitable for direct compression.
Halved Splice
Modified halved splice with a notch to prevent slipping.
Square Splice
Combines features of compression and tension splices. Beveled bottom prevents pull-apart, secured with fishplates or scabs.
Scarfed Splice
Metal rings used in heavy construction to strengthen bolted joints.
Split Rings
Corrugated rings used in lighter construction to connect timber frames.
Toothed Rings
Used in timber-to-timber or timber-to-metal connections. One side clawed, the other smooth.
Claw Plates
Reinforces timber connections by lying flush with the surface. Used in timber-to-metal connections.
Shear Plates
A horizontal structural member in the framing of a timber-framed house, typically supporting the ends of the ceiling joists and acting as the main horizontal support for the floor or
roof above
