What is the definition of stress?
Stress is the mental and physical response and adaptation by our bodies to
change and challenges.
What is a stressor?
Any real or perceived physical, social, or psychological event or stimulus that causes the body to react or respond.
What is eustress?
Positive stress that presents an opportunity for personal growth and can improve health.
What is distress?
Negative stress that can have a detrimental effect on health.
What are the three types of distress?
Acute stress, episodic acute stress, and chronic stress.
What is the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)?
A three-phase physiological response to stress: Alarm, Resistance, and Exhaustion.
What happens during the alarm phase of GAS?
The body enters a protect mode, triggering the fight-or-flight response.
What is the role of the sympathetic nervous system in stress?
It energizes the body for the fight-or-flight response.
What hormone is released during the stress response to provide energy?
Cortisol.
What is allostatic load?
The exhaustive wear and tear on the body caused by prolonged or excessive stress responses.
How does chronic stress affect cardiovascular health?
It increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart arrhythmias, and CVD.
How does stress contribute to weight gain?
It raises cortisol levels, increasing hunger and fat storage, especially in the abdominal area.
What is technostress?
Stress caused by an unhealthy relationship with technology and constant connectivity.
What is shift-and-persist?
A strategy involving reframing stressors positively while maintaining focus on long-term goals.
