Molecular Shapes Flashcards

1
Q

What is the difference between bonding pairs and non-bonding pairs.

A

Bonding pairs are shared between two atoms to make up the covalent bond. Non bonding pairs are lone pairs on the atom.

Q

How is the molecular shape formed?

A

The shape is due to repulsion of the negative charges around the central atom.

Q

What are the bonding and non-bonding pairs sometimes referred to?

A

Areas/regions of electron density. This tells us there are seperate areas where electrons lie.

Q

What is the exception to the linear molecular shape?

A
