Molecule Terms Flashcards
(16 cards)
Monomer
Small Units of Large Molecules(Polymers)
Polymer
Large molecules made by bonding a series of building blocks(monomer)
Dehydration Synthesis Reaction
Two small molecules are joined together to form a big molecule after water is released.
Hydrolysis Reaction
A bond get broken apart into smaller parts by the addition of water
Protein
A chain of amino acids(polypeptide). They are essential for basis of body structures.
Amino Acid
The molecules that make up proteins.
Peptide bond
A covalent bond between 2 amino acids
Carbohydrate
Any group of organic compounds that have C, H, and O.
Monosaccharide
They are the simplest form of carbohydrate and are sugars. They typically 3 to 7 carbon atoms.
Disaccharide
A substance formed of 2 molecules of simple sugars(monosaccharides)
Polysaccharides
A polymeric carbohydrates made of long chain of monosaccharide joined by glycosidic bond
Lipid
Are organic compounds that are fatty, waxy, or oily. They are insoluble in water.
Triglycerides
A type of fat(lipid) found in your body.
Glycerol
A 3 carbon alcohol with 3 hydroxyl group.
Fatty acid
A straight chain of Carbon with a corboxyl group(-COOH). They are the building block of fat in our bodies and in the food we eat.
Polypeptide
A substance that has least 5 amino acid chain.
