Molecule Vocab Flashcards
(18 cards)
Molecule
2 or more atoms bonded together
Chemical bond
Connection between atoms
Model
Representation of an object
Chemical formula
The atoms (letters and numbers) that make up a molecule
Chemical structure
The specific way that atoms are arranged
Crystal
Structure of atoms or molecules in a 3D pattern
Polymer
Structure of atoms or molecules in a repeating pattern
Extended structure
A molecule whose atoms occur in a constant ratio + repeating pattern
Ratio
A quantity relationship between 2 things
Glucose and fructose both have an atomic composition of C6H12O6 but they are different molecules. What is the most likely the major difference between them?
They have different structures.
List two difference between crystals and polymers.
They have different structures and they have different amounts of atoms.
C3H4 has how many elements? Atoms?
2 elements, 7 atoms
What is an element?
Anything on the periodic table, one type of atom, represented by squares on the periodic table.
What is an atom?
Makes up everything, has protons, neutrons, and electrons, smallest unit of matter that has the properties of an element.
What is a molecule?
2 or more atoms bonded together.
When making molecule models, what do t(e beads represent? The sticks?
Beads=atoms, sticks=bonds
Can you have 2 different crystals made up of the same atom? Give an example. How is it the same? How is it different?
Yes, because diamond and graphite are both crystals. Diamonds and graphite are both made of carbon and that is the same about them. Something that is different is there structure.
