Molecule Vocabulary Flashcards
(17 cards)
Molecules
Two more atoms bonded together
Chemical bond
Connection between Atoms
Model
Representation of an object
Chemical formula
The atoms (letters and number) that make up a molecule
Chemical structure
The specific way that atoms are arranged
Crystal
Structure of atoms or molecules in 3-D pattern
Polymer
Structure of molecules in a repeating chain patter
Extended structure
A molecule whose atom occur in a constant ratio and repeating pattern
Ratio
A quantity relationship between two things
List 2 differences between crystals and polymers
- A polymer is in a repeating pattern and a crystal is in a 3-D pattern.
- Crystal is atoms or molecules, but a polymer is just a molecule.
Glucose and fructose both have an atomic composition of C6 H12 06, but they are different molecules. What is most likely the major difference between them?
They have a different substance
C3 H4 has how many elements? Atoms?
Two elements and seven atoms
What is an element?
An element is type of atom one block represents it on the periodic table
What is an atom?
An atom is the smallest unit of matter that has the same amount of properties of an element
What is a molecule?
A molecule is two or more atoms bonded together
When making molecules models, what do the bees represent? The sticks?
The bees represents the atoms and the sticks represents the bonds
Can you have two different crystals that are made up of the same atom? Give an example. How is it the same? How is it different?
Yes, diamond and graphite. They are both made up of carbon. Their structures are different.
