Define the term moment of force with an equation
moment of force = force x perpendicular distance from pivot
Define the term couple in terms of forces.
two forces that act in the opposite direction, have equal magnitude and cause a rotation
Define the term torque of a couple with an equation.
torque = force (of one of the forces in the couple) x perpendicular distance between forces
Define the principle of moments with an equation.
sum of clockwise moments = sum of anticlockwise moments
Define the term centre of mass
centre of mass: the point from where mass acts
Define the term centre of gravity
centre of gravity: the point from where weight acts
what are the conditions for a body to be in equilibrium?
- net force acting must be zero
- sum of clockwise moments about a point = sum of anticlockwise moments about the same point
