this force acting over the specific time is known as impulse
the impulse experienced by the projectile and the gun must be equal in magnitude
according to newtons third law
if the gun exerts a force on the projectile
then the projectile must exert a force of equal magnitude
BUT
in the opposite direction than that of the gun
the gun and projectile are in contact with eachother with the same amount of time
while the force acts on both of them
