Mometrix Test Prep Flashcards
(26 cards)
What is Electrophoresis?
The separation of molecules based on electrical charge
What is a Calorimetry?
Used to determine the heat released or absorbed in a chemical reaction
What is a Tiration?
Helps determine the precise endpoint of a reaction
What is Chromatography?
Refers to a set of laboratory techniques used to separate or analyze mixtures
What does ampere (A) measure?
Electric current
What does kelvin (K) measure?
thermodynamic temperature
What does mole (mol) measure?
the amount of a substance at a molecular level
What are histones?
Proteins that help package DNA more efficiently by wrapping around it, shortening the overall strand
What is allopatric speciation?
Occurs with geographic isolation where one population is split into two
What is sympatric speciation?
Occurs when there is no geographical isolation but rather behavioral isolations
What is peripatric speciation?
Occurs when one species is spread out over a large area
What is artificial speciation?
Occurs when humans cause a new species to develop
What is an independent variable?
The variable that you change in an experiment on purpose.
What is a dependent variable?
The variable that is influenced by the independent variable, the results of your experiment
Where do you look to take a volume reading of a liquid in a graduated cylinder?
The bottom of the meniscus
What is viscosity?
The resistance to flow
What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons
How many known elements are there?
118
What do two or more atoms combine to form?
A molecular compound
What is the atomic mass of an atom?
The atomic mass is the combined protons and neutrons and the average mass of the element
What is a chemical bond?
When atoms share electrons
Why do atoms bond?
They bond so electrons can pair up and become more stable
What is velocity?
speed that includes direction
What is newton’s first law of motion?
An object in motion will remain in motion and an object at rest will remain at rest unless there is a net force acting upon it
