Monomers And Polymers Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is a monomer?
A monomer is a singular repeating unit that forms larger molecules.
Give some examples of monomers!
Monosaccharides
Peptides
Nucleotides
Describe what is formed form a condensation reaction.
A condensation reaction is when a monomer is added to a chain, a glycosidic bond is formed and water is released.
This reaction forms polymers!!
Is water released from a glycosidic bond in a condensation reaction?
Yes
Because of the reaction between HO and OH, forming H2O + O!
What is a condensation reaction also known as?
A polymerisation reaction!
What is a polymer?
A polymer is a molecule that is made of many repeated, identical monomers.
Name some examples of polymers!
Polysaccharides
Polypeptides
Polynucleotides
Describe what happens in a hydrolysis reaction.
A hydrolysis reaction adds water (H2O) to a polymer to hydrolyse (break down) the glycosidic bonds between monomers.
(This is done to make monomers)!!
What are hydrolysis reactions specifically? (Like type, etc)
They are reversible reactions!
What are monomers made of?
They’re made of single repeating units, these units are made of carbon-based monomers!
What is a polymer made of?
Many repeating, identical monomers.
What type of reaction turns a monosaccharide into a polysaccharide? (Monomer to polymer)
Condensation reaction/ polymerisation reaction.
What type of reaction makes a polysaccharide into a monosaccharide? (Polymer to monomer)
Hydrolysis reaction
