Monomers and Polymers Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are carbohydrates?
Organic compounds which provide energy for cells, and are used for structure in cell membranes as well as ATP production for respiration.
What are lipids?
Fatty compounds which can provide energy for cells, form a bilayer in cell membranes and make up some hormones
What are proteins?
The main component of many cellular structures, mainly forming energy and chemical messengers.
What are nucleic acids?
Natural chemical compounds which form polymers (DNA and RNA) which make up all proteins. They are the code for the sequence of amino acids, which make up all proteins.
What proof is there that all life share the same ancestors?
Every form of life uses the same nucleic acids as genetic material, as well as the same 20 amino acids to build energy stores and make their cell membranes.
What are monomers?
A single small molecule that can be joined with other forms of polymers.
What are polymers?
A single large molecule made from repeating units of monomers.
What is a Monosaccharide?
A simple carbohydrate.
What are polysaccharides?
Polymers of Monosaccharides bonded together to form a large molecule.
What is an isomer?
A molecule of the same chemical formula.
