monotropic theory Flashcards
(8 cards)
what are the main assumptions
-Attachment is innate which gives us a advantage to survive
-Imprinting and attachment evolved as ensures young animals stay close to caregivers which protects them from hazards
what does the theory mean
Emphasis on attachment to primary caregiver and is viewed as unique and more important for the child than other attachments
-Bowlby beleives the more time spent with the mother the better
What is the theory based on
Law of continuity
Law of accumulated separation
what is the law of continuity
suggests the more constant the care is the greater the attachment will be
what is the law of accumulated separation
effects of separations combine to create a big negative problem eg. developmental disorders
what are social releasers
-Set of cute innate behaviours that encourage attention form adults
-Purpose is to activate adult attachment system to make them love the baby and take care of it
-Bowlby recognised attachment is a reciprocal system in humans
what is the critical period
-0-2 Years
-Time period in which infants attachment system is active
-If attachment is not formed then it will be difficult to from them later on
what are internal working models
-Schemas are mental representation that a bay has of their relationship with their primary caregiver
-This later serves as a template for what relationships should look like eg. bad parent bad relationsjips
