What is the Sanctity of Life?
The belief that life is sacred and comes from God. Only He can create or destroy it.
What is the Value of Life?
Some people believe that life’s worth is only financial, which implies that some peoples’ lives may be considered of limited value. Other people argue that life is more important than money, and that it cannot be given a value (life is invaluable). Think about what is meant by value.
What is Quality of Life?
The belief that life must feel worth living.
What is IVF?
In-vitro fertilisation; fertilisation of an egg in a test-tube. Embryo is then implanted back into the woman’s body.
What is AID/AIH?
Artificial insemination by donor/husband. This is when sperm is collected from a donor/husband and inserted in the lab into the neck of the womb.
What is FT?
Fertility treatment
Give reasons why Christians may be against AID/AIH.
Many Christians believe that AID is a form of adultery, because the woman would carry the child of someone other than her husband. The Roman Catholic denomination is also generally against AIH, because masturbation is required to obtain the sperm, which is considered adultery by RCs.
Christian teaching of why we should respect the human body
So God created man in his own image - Genesis 1:27
Muslim quote against surrogacy
None can be their mothers except those who gave them birth - Surah 58
Christian (Jehovah’s Witness) teaching against blood transfusions
The life is in the blood - Leviticus 17:11
Muslim quote against embryology
God has made life sacred - Surah 17:33
What is abortion?
The removal of a foetus from the womb before it can survive
What is euthanasia?
Bringing about a premature but painless and gentle death.
What is voluntary euthanasia?
Ending life painlessly when someone in great pain requests death.
What is non-voluntary euthanasia?
Ending someone’s life painlessly in their best interest when they are incapable of requesting death themselves.
What is assisted suicide?
Helping a seriously ill person to commit suicide.
What is a near-death-experience (NDE)
When someone about to die has a mystical, out-of-body experience.
What does the concept of reincarnation state?
After death, our soul is reborn in a new body
What is resurrection?
The body remains dead on Earth until the end of the world when it is raised from the dead.
However, God can resurrect people; Jesus resurrected Lazarus according to the Bible
What is immortality of the soul?
The idea that the soul lives on after death.
What is surrogacy?
If a woman is not capable of carrying a baby, a fertilised egg (from the husband’s sperm) is placed in the womb of another woman for the nine months.
What is an ethical issue linked to surrogacy?
The surrogate mother may become attached to the baby as she shares hormones with it for nine months. Who does the baby truly belong to?
What do some Christians have against FT?
They argue that life is a gift from God (Sanctity of Life), only He has the right to give it. Life is a gift, not a right.
Give reasons why Christians may support IVF/AI
- Brings happiness to people who cannot have children.
- If life comes from God, anything which creates new life must be good.
- It can create loving families.
- Most loving action is to offer medical help and to use these God-given gifts of healing.
- God said “Go forth and multiply”.
