Moray Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is the area
Cognitive
What was the aim of the study
To investigate factors influencing the amount of information recognized in an unattended message
Research method
3 lab experiments
Sample
Male and female undergraduates and research workers
12-14 ppts
Controls
- loudness was matched for each ppts
- participants were given practice at shadowing first
- all passages were recorded by one male speaker at a rate of 130 wpm
Experiment 1
Repeated measures design
What was the aim for experiment 1
To see how many words from a list in the unattended message were recognised
What were the results for experiment 1
There was no evidence of words from the rejected message being recognised
Therefore information in the unattended ear does not break through the attentional barrier
Experiment 2
Repeated measures
What was the aim for experiment 2
To see the effect of hearing your own name in the unattended ear does not break through the attentional barrier
What was the IV for experiment 2
Whether instructions were prefixed by the participants own name or not
What was the DV
The number of affective instructions perceived
What were the results
The presence of a name causes the instruction to be heard
The affective content in an unattended message can break through the attentional barrier
What was the aim for experiment 3
To show that instructions might alter the chances of material in the rejected message being perceived
What design was experiment 3
Independent measures design
What was the IV for experiment 3
Whether the ppts were told beforehand that they had to answer questions about the shadowed message at the end of each passage or told to remember all the numbers s/he could
What was the DV for experiment 3
The number of digits correctly reported
What were the results for experiment 3
There was no significant difference between the mean number of digits reported under two conditions
Therefore even when alerted to the possibility of hearing digits, ppts’ perception was not affected
