Socket Wrenches

  • Allows access to recessed nuts or bolts
  • Uses speed, ratchet, or torque handles
  • Sockets used for air-operated tools should be 4 or 6 point sockets
  • 4, 6, 8, or 12 point designs
  • Never use regular sockets on an impact tool

Prick Punch

  • Used to make a small indentation at an intersection of
    two lines
  • When satisfied that the location is correct then a
    center punch is used to make a deeper indentation
  • The prick punch has a long slim taper and is useful for
    aligning holes
  • Ground to a 30 ̊ included angle

Chisels

  • High carbon steel stock machined and tempered
  • Body and head are softer than the cutting edge to prevent chipping
  • Soft head will mushroom after use and so must be occasionally ground to prevent
    pieces from flying off
  • Do not hold with a tight grip as this can cause more injury if the hammer misses
  • Wear safety glasses

Soft Faced Hammer

  • Used where a metal hammer will damage the work
  • Plastic, brass, lead, rawhide, rubber, wood
  • Dead blow is a hollow soft faced hammer with lead shot in the hollow
  • If a soft faced hammer is not available the wood is sometimes placed between the work and the hammer blow
  • Wood mallets should be made of the type of wood that is not easily split

Claw Hammer

  • Steel faced
  • Used to drive and pull nails
  • 16 oz. is a general use hammer
  • Heavier for framing, lighter for finishing
  • Curved claw – used for pulling nails
  • Straight claw – used for ripping apart wood assemblies
  • Never strike any thing harder than ordinary nails with a claw hammer as it may chip and cause an injury
  • A checkered face may be provided to provide a gripping surface for nail heads
