More Natural Hazards Flashcards
(4 cards)
Reasons why people continue to live in areas at risk from a tectonic hazard. (2,3 reasons)
- Fertile Soil
• Volcanic ash breaks down into very fertile soil, ideal for farming - Tourism
• Volcanic landscapes attract tourists, providing jobs and income - Geothermal Energy
• Volcanic regions often provide cheap, renewable geothermal energy due to the warm temperature of water as magma is close to the surface (e.g. Iceland).
What are the natural factors that contribute to climate change.
Orbital Changes (Milankovitch Cycles)
• The Earth’s orbit around the Sun changes over thousands of years
affect how much solar energy the Earth receives, leading to ice ages or warmer periods.
The Sun’s energy output varies in cycles (e.g. sunspot activity every 11 years).
• More sunspots = more solar energy = warmer climate.
Human factors contributing to climate change
Burning of fossil fuels.
Deforestation
How can we mitigate climate change?
alternative
energy production, carbon capture, planting trees, international agreements. Government policy.
