Ethical - Effective Treatment
I am ethically obligated to provide services that are likely to benefit my clients based on my competence, informed by evidence, guided by a treatment plan, and continuously evaluated for progress.
Psychodynamic - Treatment Plan
I’ll be using a psychodynamic orientation in this case. Psychodynamic theory posits that many of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by unconscious processes stemming from past experiences, particularly early childhood. Given the client’s struggles with X, Y, Z, I’ll use this orientation to try to help bring these unconscious patterns into awareness, allowing the client to understand their impact on the present.
Bowenian Family Systems - Treatment Plan
I am going to use a Bowenian Family Systems approach because I think it could help decrease anxiety in the system, XX increase each member’s differentiation, reduce emotional reactivity, and understand their family system across time.
Diversity - Sexual orientation & Gender Identity
It would be reasonable for X to assume I am straight and therefore talk about his sexual experience in a way that would tend towards heteronormativity, and therefore possible alienate parts of himself that are valid and needing attention, so I would need to be sure to articulate my own capacity and interest to invite that into session.
Diversity - Race & Culture
It would be reasonable for X to assume I am an American, born and raised, and therefore he might talk (codeswitching, w/emotional labor) about his cultural history and distress in a way that would tend towards whiteness normativity (as a way to try to save me discomfort), and therefore possible alienate parts of himself that are valid and needing attention, so I would need to be sure to articulate my own capacity and interest to invite that into session.
