Morpheme
Morphemes are the smallest units of meaning in a language and can’t be divided further. Some morphemes are full words, while others like prefixes and suffixes are just parts of words.
Free morphemes
Can stand alone (run, dog)
Bound morphemes
must be attached (-ed, re-)
Inflectional ending
shows tense, number, etc. (-s, -ed)
Derivational
change meaning or part of speech (happy-unhappy, kind-kindness)
How to teach morphemes
-Explicitly teach prefixes, suffixes, root words.
-Use morpheme maps or graphic organizers.
-Break apart multisyllabic words to analyze meaning and structure.
When to double when adding -ing
double the final consonant for CVC word pattern (run - running).
Six Syllable Types
-Closed: ends in C, short vowel (cat)
-Open: ends in vowel, long vowel (he)
-Silent-e: long vowel, final -e (cake)
-Vowel team: vowel pair, long (meat)
-R-controlled: vowel + r (bird)
-Consonant -le: ends in -le (little)
