1
Q

What are the key properties of stem cells?

A

Stem cells have the ability to divide and replicate and also have potency which is the ability to become specialised.

Q

What is meant by totipotent?

A

Totipotent cells can divide and differentiate into any type of body cell. They only occur for a very limited time in the early mammalian embryos and during development, totipotent cells translate only part of the DNA while results in cell specialisation.

Q

What is meant by pluriopotent?

A

Pluriopotent cells are descendants of totipotent cells and can differentiate into any type of body cell except those that make up the placenta

Q

What is the importance of unipotent stem cells?

A

Unipotent cardiomyocytes could develop into new heart tissues. Recent research has shown that cardiomyocytes do have regenerative capabilities.

Q

What are two issues surrounding the use of stem cells?

A

Ethical issues: an embryo has the ability to form a human. Also, stem cells may multiply out of control in the body forming tumours.
