Motion Flashcards
(19 cards)
The units that speed is measured in
M/s
The equation for speed
Speed= distance/ time
What is the line for a distance time graph at a constant speed
A straight line
What controls the gradient of a graph
The speed
What is the name for distance travelled in a specific direction
Displacement, this is a vector quantity
What does a speedometer show
The instantaneous speed of the car
What is velocity
Speed in a specified direction and is also a vector quantity
What is the equation for acceleration
Acceleration= change in velocity
Time taken
Or a= (v-u)
t
What are the units for acceleration
M/s(2)
What is the equation for velocity
Velocity=
increase in displacement
Time taken
What is the definition of deceleration
It means slowing down
The object will have a smaller final velocity than it’s starting velocity
On a graph what does a shallow gradient mean
Low acceleration
On a graph what does a steep gradient mean
High acceleration
On a graph what does a horizontal gradient mean
No acceleration
What does a downwards sloping graph mean
It means the gradient is negative
Deceleration
what is the equation for average velocity
Initial velocity+ final velocity
2
Acceleration of free fall
Objects that are said to be undergoing free fall, are not encountering a significant force of air resistance; they are falling under the sole influence of gravity. Under such conditions, all objects will fall with the same rate of acceleration, regardless of their mass
Terminal velocity
Is when there is no resultant force and the object reaches a steady speed
3 stages of falling object
At the start - accelerates downward, no air resistance
Resultant force acts downwards
As it gains speed- weight is the same, air resistance increases - resultant force is downwards
Eventually, the object’s weight is balanced by the air resistance. There is no resultant force and the object reaches a steady speed, called the terminal velocity.
