Motion Flashcards
(41 cards)
Speed
The rate at which something moves
Acceleration
Increase in the speed of movement
Deceleration
Decrease in the speed of movement
Displacement
How far out of place an object is from its starting position (a straight line)
Distance
Total length or route that was taken from start to end.
Velocity
Rate of movement over displacement
Instantaneous Speed
Speed at any particular instance/random
Average speed
All of the speeds added up and then divided by time.
Distance is a
Scalar quantity
Displacement is a
Vector quantity
Scalar Quantity
It has size but not direction
Vector quantity
It has both size and direction
Average speed is calculated by
distance divided by time travelled
To find distance
Velocity x time
or
Speed x time
To find speed
distance divided by time
To find time
distance divided by speed
To go from km/h to m/s
divide by 3.6
To go from m/s to km/hr
multiply by 3.6
Where is time situated on the line?
x axis
What does the slope of a distance/time graph tell us?
About the speed
How can you calculate the speed of a distance time graph?
Slope = rise over run
What does the slope or gradient tell is about for a speed time graph?
Acceleration
How to find acceleration?
rise over run = Vf - Vi
———-
time taken
How to find the distance travelled on a speed/time or velocity/time graph?
The area under neath the line of the graph
