Motion And Forces Flashcards
Reference point
A location to which another location is compared
Position
An objects location
Motion
A change of position over time
Speed
A measure of how fast something moves through a particular distance over a defined time period
Velocity
A speed in a specific location
Vector
A quantity that has both size and direction
Acceleration
The rate at which velocity changes over time
Force
A push or pull
Net Force
The rate overall force acting on an object when all of the forces are acting on it are combined
Newton’s First Law
A scientific law starting that objects at rest remain at rest, and objects in motion with the same velocity, unless acted on by an umbalenced
Inertia
The resistance of an object to a change in the speed or the direction of its motion
Newton’s Second Law
A scientific law stating that the acceleration of an object increases with increased force and decreases with increased mass
Centripetal force
Any force that keeps a object moving in a circle
Newton’s Third Law
An object experts a force on another object, the second object experts a force that is equal inside and opposite direction back at the first object
