16
Q

How can employers apply Maslow’s theory to increase motivation?

A

By ensuring workers feel safe and have a stable wage.

17
Q

What is the Basic Needs Satisfaction Scale (BNSS)?

A

A measure of basic needs satisfaction based on Maslow’s theory.

18
Q

What was the reliability score for the BNSS in children?

A

0.83, suggesting it is a consistent measure.

19
Q

What is a limitation of the BNSS study in terms of generalisability?

A

The sample consisted only of people from wealthy areas.

20
Q

What are McClelland’s three work-related motivational needs?

A
  • Achievement * Power * Affiliation
21
Q

What does the need for achievement entail?

A

The urge to achieve something in work and master a task.

22
Q

How do high achievers approach risk in tasks?

A

They avoid low reward/low risk situations and high risk situations.

23
Q

What characterizes the need for affiliation?

A

The need to be liked, accepted, and feel part of a group.

24
Q

What is the need for power?

A

The desire to have control and authority over others.

25
What are the two types of power identified by McClelland?
* Personal power (need to control others) * Institutional power (need to coordinate and organise a group or team to further business goals)
26
What is the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)?
A projective test that involves describing ambiguous stimuli to reveal unconscious motives.
27
What is a limitation of McClelland's theory in terms of cultural applicability?
It was constructed using males from Western, individualistic cultures.
28
What is a criticism regarding the individual vs situational explanations in McClelland's theory?
It only considers individual needs, not situational factors.
29
How was the BNSS developed?
Saaednia 2011 - 13 children plus their parents and educators were interviewed using open ended questions. Data from interviews were analysed and coded against Maslow’s theory. Themes such as P’s wishes and desires, openness of the family to low the child”s independence and supportiveness of the family were used to construct BNSS.
30
What are need theories?
motivational models that attempt to explain employee behavior based on the idea that people are driven to fulfill certain needs
31
What are need theories?
motivational models that attempt to explain employee behavior based on the idea that people are driven to fulfill certain needs
32
What are the advantages of the BNSS?
1. BNSS is an indicator of life satisfaction, which changes depending on culture. For poore nations it’s safety. Wealthier nations its love and esteem. Valid. 2. BNSS allows quantitative data to be reliably obtained when researching Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, overcoming criticism that the theory is not scientific and not testable. 3. The BNSS is a reliable tool to assess children’s needs
33
Explain the weaknesses of BNSS
1. It is low in generalisability bc the sample only consisted of people who lived in the wealthy areas of Tehran 2. Although the study tried to ensure the result were correct by interviewing parents and educators as well, Ps may have limited ability to express themselves fully due to their age, lowering validity.
34
Strengths of the Thematic Apperception Test?
1. McClelland’s theory can be used to find out the needs of potential and current employees, allowing them to place people in areas to which they are most suited. Can screen prospective employees so they can employ the benefit
35
Limitations of TAT?
It measured unobservable personality characteristics from the preconscious mind. Any result obtained cannot be disproven.
