what is the importance of motivation to a business?
*Highly motivated staff leads to: greater productivity, less wastage, higher profitability, higher quality
*If employees are demotivated, they may: lack commitment/loyalty to the business, have high absenteeism, low productivity
This may lead to: high labour turnover or industrial disputes
Taylor (scientific management)
- motivated by money
- close supervision
- break production into smaller components
- piece rate = work harder and maximise productivity
- autocratic style
- inc productivity and lower unit costs
- repetitive nature = demotivate
what is motivation?

- mayo said people are more motivated by:
- freedom at work, two way communication, group work
- so basically when their social needs are being met whilst at work
- paternalistic approach

- heirarchy of needs
- 5 levels
- every level needs to be met to progress
- hard to measure,
- some people may not have their lower needs met but still aim for self actualisation
herzberg - two factor theory
- 2 factors:
1. HYGEINE = pay, working conditions, job security, how your treated
2. MOTIVATORS = achievement, inc responsibility, meaningful work - con - everyone has different individual needs
