motivation, arousal Flashcards
(17 cards)
what is intrinsic motivation
the drive within a person to perform a task for their own sake
what is extrinsic motivation
the drive to perform a task in order to achieve a reward
positives of intrinsic motivation
-good for all performers
-goal setting
-long lasting results
positives of extrinsic motivation
-good for beginners
-clear evidence of success
-short lasting results
what is arousal
level of excitement that a person feels, or the physiological and psychological readiness
what is drive theory
as arousal increases so does performance
-the dominant response is the learned behaviour that is most likely to occur when arousal increases
what is inverted U theory
as arousal increases, performance increases. when arousal gets too high the performance drops
what is the catastrophe theory
when arousal reaches past optimum point there is a sudden decline in performance which is caused by high cognitive anxiety
how does the dominant réponse affect performers in drive theory
dominant response of an experience performer is most likely to be correct than a beginners is most likely to be incorrect
experienced- want high arousal
beginners- want low arousal
what type of performer might want low arousal levels
beginners
fine/complex skills
introverts
what type of performer might want high arousal levels
experts
simple/gross skills
extroverts
advantages of drive theory
-simple to understand
-accurate in some situations
-helps coaches understand the relationship between arousal and performance
disadvantages of drive theory
-doesn’t take individual differences into account
-doenst explain why some performers perform well at low arousal
-not all performance increases as arousal does
advantages of inverted U theory
-more realistic than drive theory
-simple to understand
-optimum point of arousal can shift for different people in different situations
disadvantages of inverted U theory
-still too simple
-doesn’t consider the effects of different types of arousal
-doesn’t state what happens after a performer under performs when over aroused
advantages of catastrophe theory
-includes a recovery which can be seen in sport
-gives a realistic explanation of a sudden drop in performance
disadvantages of catastrophe theory
-not all performers have a sudden decline
-catastrophes are rare
-doesn’t take personality into account
