Motor Systems: Behavioural Performance Flashcards
(16 cards)
motor behaviour
movements of the body produced as a consequence of contractions of the skeletal muscles
the hierarchy
there are 6 categories in the heirarchy: simple reflexes, postural adjustments, locomotion, sensory orientation, species typical behaviours, and acquired behaviours
simple reflexes
usually spinal but not always, involve only a few synapses
postural adjustments
standing, head tilt, etc
locomotion
walking, running, flying, etc
sensory orientation
aiming sensors at stimulus sources
species typical behaviours
complex movements, but usually executed sccording to some pre wired plan, eating, courtship displays, aggressive behaviours
acquired behaviours
motor skills acquired and/or tuned through interaction with the environment, speech, tool use, fishing by bears
control systems
every movement that you produce involves a speed-accuracy tradeoff, such as for any muscle, increase speed comes at the cost of decreased accuracy
closed-loop movements
accuracy is provided by neural mechanisms using feedback from the sensory system. as movement is executed, sensory info is used to determine the accuracy of the movement.
combinations
many human movements, especially of the upper limbs, combine both
implicit memory
motor ability is learned and retained through a non-conscious mechanism simply from doing it over and over again
cognitive stage
conscious guidance of the behaviour
stages in aquiring a new motor skill
cognitive stage, association stage, and automatic stage
association stage
links are formed between certain actions and successful outcomes. this is the tuning phase
automatic stage
once the skill has been acquired, it can be rattled off as a single unit and produce smooth seamless behaviour
