Lips (labia)
Made of skin (outer) and mucous membrane (inner); cover orbicularis muscle

Lateral walls of oral cavity; made of skin (outer) and mucous membrane (inner); cover buccinator muscles

(Gums); soft tissue; lines sockets of maxillae/mandible and surrounds teeth

Fauces
Opening between oral cavity proper and the pharynx

Hard palate
Anterior roof of oral cavity; partition between mouth and nasal cavities; made by maxillary and palatine bones
Soft palate
Posterior roof of oral cavity; made of muscle
Uvula
Fleshy projection from soft palate; prevents foods and liquids from entering nose
Tonsils
Soft tissue masses; Palatine located at posterior end of oral cavity;
Lingual located at the base of the tongue
Tongue
Skeletal muscle lined with papillae (tastebuds); Anchored to mandible, hyoid and styloid processes of temporal bones; Attached to floor of mouth by lingual frenulum; Contains lingual glands (secrete lingual lipase); Positions food for chewing, gathering and swallowing
Salivary glands
Exocrine glands; Secrete saliva (which is a mixture of mucous, serosa and enzymes) needed for digestion, lubrication, cleaning, antimicrobial action and pH buffering; Glands are located in floor of mouth (submandibular), below tongue (sublingual) or anterior to ears (parotid)
Teeth (dentes)
20 deciduous (baby teeth) which are replaced by 32 permanent teeth;
Anchor into sockets of maxilla and mandible by periodontal ligament;
Include: incisors (cutting), canines (tearing, piercing); premolars (grinding); molars (grinding)
