Aspect Ratio
The ratio of the height of the television screen to its width.
Audio Console
the piece of equipment used to gather, mix, amplify sounds before sending them to their next destination.
Back-Time
The process of timing a piece of audio or video so that it can be started at a precise time and end at the proper time.
Black
A synchronized video signal that contains no picture information - a black screen.
Blocking
The planning of all movement and positioning of talent and production equipment.
Bus
The mixing bar that connects the buttons representing the various video inputs on the switcher
Bust
Term used to immediately stop production and reset to the beginning.
Character Generator (CG)
A special effects generator that electronically produces a series of letters and numbers directly on the television screen, or keyed on a a background picture.
Chrominance
The color in a video signal.
Camera Control Units
Electronic control equipment that is used to regulate all the engineering functions, such as luminance and chrominance, of each camera.
Color Bars
An electronically generated pattern of vertical color strips that can be used to standardize and calibrate the color values of all cameras and monitors. Red, blue, green, yellow, cyan, and magenta.
Contrast Ratio
The relationship of the brightest area to the darkest area in a shot.
Crop
To cut off the edges or border of a picture.
Cue
To prepare an audio or video source for a precise start at some pre-determined point. Or, a signal to start, pause, or stop any production activity or talent action.
Cut
An instantaneous change from one video source to another.
Cyc or Cyclorama
A large, continuous, smooth backing, usually made of fabric, that may cover two or three walls of a studio.
Dissolve
A simultaneous fading out of one picture or source while fading in to another picture or source. A temporary overlapping of two images or sources.
Fade
in video, the gradual appearance of a picture source from black, or the disappearance to black, using the fader bar. (Fade in or Fade out.). In audio, the gradual increase or decrease of sound volume. (Fade up music/Fade out music.”
Floor Plan
A diagram of the arrangement of the set, curtains, or other background, camera movements, and set pieces and props.
Frame
To fill the picture with meaningful, aesthetically pleasing composition. Also, a complete scanning cycle, ever 1/30th of a second. it represents the smallest complete television unit.
Headroom
Space between the top of the subject’s head and the upper edge of the camera frame.
Hot
Refers to a camera or microphone this is up or live.
