Q

Sensory memory aspects

A

-brief duration
-high capacity
-everything you sense
-information moved further if attention is payed to it

Q

Short-Term aspects

A

-coded acoustically
-stored for 18 seconds
-capacity of 5-9
-can be passed on through reversal (around 7 times to enter LTM)

Q

Long-Term memory

A

-potentially permanent
-stores semantically
-capacity is life long
-when we want LTM information we need to pass it through the STM via retreival

Q

Case Study: HM (+)

A

-HM suffered epilepsy and underwent surgery to relieve this.
-Accidentally removed a part of the hippocampus from both sides of brain.
-Hippocampus is centre of memory function.
-He was asked questions like the year and his age but he got them wrong.
-He couldn’t form new LTMs.

Q

Case Study: KF (+)

A

-Was in an accident and his brain was damaged.
-His STM was lost but LTM remained intact.

Q

Cons -

A

-Research has low ecological validity
-Too simplistic (reductionist)
-Assumed LTM is unlimited.
-A procedural memory doesn’t make sense
-No general store
