what is a stigma and how does it relate to PWD
stigma: making a negative assumption based on a set of beliefs to people with certain characteristics
perpetrated through our lack of understanding and education with PWD
five social barriers to inclusion
stigma, prejudice, oppression, discrimination, stereotypes
prejudice
biased attitudes or beliefs towards a particular person
- social isolation, questioning competence, restricted participation
stereotypes
exaggerated beliefs about the sameness of everyone in a group, generalizations instead of individualization
discrimination
unequal treatment or access, founded on prejudice and stereotypes
devalues person
oppression
collective behavior from a dominant majority (able bodied) that consciously or unconsciously devalues other groups for their own benefit
people unaware of their privilege and power

- everyone has a right to participate in PA
- everyone has the right to fall and get hurt
- dedicated to providing equitable access in equipment and environment
categorical model
- associated disability with being inferior or less than
- perceived as a medical tragedy/trauma/defect/problem

social minority model
- disability associated as being different and not inferior
- individuals have one commonality which is a social stigma that should be eliminated
- terminology tends to be positive or neutral
- active graphics
ecological model
- same as social minority, but PWD have person-environment interactions that cause difference
- persons have common barriers, but those barriers must be eliminated
- assessments encompass individual and their ecosystem
disability
physical or mental condition that limits a person’s movements, sense, or activities
inclusion
action or state of being included within a group or structure
social justice
distribution of wealth, opportunities, privileges in society
