multi-store model of memory Flashcards
(14 cards)
what is the MSM
An explanation of memory based on three separate memory stores, and how information is transferred between these stores.(ATKINSON AND SHIFFRIN 1968)
describe the sensory store
holds info very briefly in its’ original sensory modality (auditory, visual etc)
describe the STM
-temporary place that holds a small amount of info that your currently thinking about
-info gets here through attention
-limited capacity of around plus or minus 7 bits of info
-decays after 15/30 secs if not rehearsed
-relies on acoustic coding (what it sounds like)
what is rehearsal
mental repitition toe keep info in the stm
how can we increase the capacity of the STM
-through chunking which is combining small bits of info into chunks by making them significant in some way so it’s easier to remember
describe the LTM store
-where we store large amounts of info that we aren’t using at the moment but can withdraw info from it
-no limit to its capacity
-anything beyond 30 secs
-it loses info over time but takes longer than the STM
-encodes info semantically, acoustically and visually
what is semantic encoding
storing info/memory in terms of what it means
what is acoustic encoding
encoding of sound
what is retrieval
copying info from the ltm into stm in order to be retrieved and used
what is dissociation
when one memory structure is affected but the other isn’t showing that the two are seperate memory stores
what evidence supports the idea of seperate memory stores?
study of being read out a list of words and trying to recall as many as possible aswell as looking at the effect of the speed and a displacement task
what pattern was showed when the words were read out normally
MURDOCH 1962;showed primacy and recency effect
what pattern was showed when the words were read out at a faster speed
RUNDUS 1971;found that inc the speed at which the words are read dec primary effect but inc recency
what pattern was showed when a displacement task was introduced between recalling the words
GLANZER AND CUNITZ 1966;effect of a displacement task between recalling words showed a inc in primary effect and a dec in recency
