What are mumps?

A

How are mumps transmitted? And what is the incubation period?

A

spread via airborne droplets or contact with infected droplets. The incubation period is 12 to 25 days

Infected individuals are contagious several days prior to the onset of parotitis and for 6 to 9 days after parotid swelling begins

What are the s/s?

A
  • nonspecific or mild respiratory symptoms or no symptoms
  • low grade fever
  • parotid swelling (swollen neck)
  • History may also include malaise, anorexia, headache, and abdominal pain.
    -parotitis (Infected individuals are contagious several days prior to the onset of parotitis and for 6 to 9 days after parotid swelling begins)

What are the complications?

A

meningitis with or without encephalitis with seizures, pancreatitis, and auditory neuritis, which can result in hearing loss.

Diagnostic Tests

A

The diagnosis is usually based on the history and clinical presentation, but serum may be tested for the presence of mumps IgG or IgM antibody

Nursing Management

A
  • pain management
  • oral fluids
  • If orchitis is present, ice packs to the testicles and gentle testicular support may be helpful. Hospitalized children should be confined to respiratory isolation to prevent spread of the disease. Infected children are considered no longer contagious 9 days following the onset of parotid swelling

Treatments

A
  • recommended to receive 2 doses MMR vaccine

Current recommendations include first mumps immunization between 12 and 15 months of age, followed by a second vaccine between 4 and 6 years of age

  • Acetaminophen or ibuprofen is used for fever management, and occasionally narcotic analgesics are required for pain management.
  • Oral fluids are encouraged to prevent dehydration
