Musclar function Flashcards
idk (25 cards)
How many muscles are there in the human body?
Over 600 muscles
What percentage of body weight do muscles make up?
40-50%
List the general characteristics common to muscle tissue.
- Contractility
- Extensibility
- Elasticity
- Atrophy
- Hypertrophy
What is contractility in muscle tissue?
The ability of a muscle to contract and generate force when stimulated by a nerve
What does extensibility mean in the context of muscle tissue?
The ability of a muscle to stretch beyond its normal resting length
Define elasticity in muscle tissue.
The muscle’s ability to return to its original resting length after the stretch is removed
What is atrophy?
The thinning or wasting away of muscle
What can cause muscle atrophy?
- Age
- Malnutrition
- Genetics
- Lack of physical activity
- Some medical conditions
What is hypertrophy?
An increase in muscle mass
What typically causes hypertrophy?
Strength training, such as weightlifting
What type of neurons bring impulses from the CNS to the muscles?
Motor neurons
What do capillaries provide to muscles?
- Oxygen
- Nutrients
- Calcium
- Remove waste products
How many types of muscle are there?
3 types
List the three types of muscle.
- Skeletal
- Cardiac
- Smooth
What type of control do skeletal muscles have?
Voluntary control
What is the appearance of skeletal muscle under a microscope?
Striated appearance
Where are smooth muscles found?
Lines the walls of blood vessels and hollow organs
How do cardiac muscles function?
Involuntary movements - contracts without conscious thought
What is the origin of a muscle?
Generally proximal to the insertion
What is the insertion of a muscle?
Generally distal to the origin
Why do muscles need both an origin and insertion?
Allows force to be exerted, which allows movement of the skeleton
Name an anterior muscle.
Examples include deltoid, pectoralis, iliopsoas
Name a posterior muscle.
Examples include trapezius, triceps brachii, latissimus dorsi
Fill in the blank: The ______ is the muscle of the heart.
Cardiac muscle
