Muscle Movements Flashcards
(23 cards)
Flexion
The decrease of the angle of a joint
(Bringing the hand towards the shoulder by flexing the bicep
Extention
The increase of the angle of a joint
(Contracting the Tricep which will bring the hand down from the shoulder, increasing the joint angle)
Abduction
The movement of a limb away from the midline of the body
(The leg moving apart)
Adduction
The movement of a limb towards the midline of the body
(The movement of the legs towards the midline of the body, Closing your legs)
Internal / Medial Rotation
The rotation of a limb towards the midline of the body
(Rotation at the hip to point the feet inwards)
External / Lateral Rotation
The rotation of limb away from the midline of the body
(Rotating the hip to point the foot away from the body)
Supination
The rotation of the hand and wrist so that the palm is facing the sky
Pronation
The rotation of the hand and wrist so that the palm is facing the ground
Horizontal Abduction
Horizontal abduction is similar to abduction in the way it is the movement of a limb away from the midline of the body
However only in the transverse plane meaning it must maintain a parallel position to the ground
Horrizontal Adduction
Horizontal adduction is similar to adduction in the way it is the movement of a limb towards the midline of the body
However only in the transverse plane meaning it must maintain a parallel position to the ground
Elevation
An upwards movement of a limb
(Shrugging shoulders or closing the mouth)
Depression
The movement of a limb downwards
(Drooping shoulders or opening mouth)
Circumduction
The circular movement of the distal end of a limb whilst the proximal end stays relatively fixed in position
(The movement of the hand in a circle whilst the shoulder stays still)
Dorsiflexion
The upwards bending of the ankle
Plantaflexion
The movement of the foot into a pointed position
Eversion
The movement of the sole of the foot away from the midline of the body
Inversion
The movement of the foots sole towards the midline of the body
Rotation
A circular motion around an axis of rotation
(When shaking the head no)
Protraction
The action of protruding or sticking out a part of the body
(Moving the neck or shoulders forwards )
Retraction
The movement of pulling a a sticking out part of the body backwards
Can also occour by pulling the scapular backwards towards the vertebral column
Lateral Flexion
The movement of bending the body or part of the body towards the side
(Bending towards the side and the spine bends)
Opposition
The movement of the thumb to the pinky of the same hand
Reposition
The movement of the thumb and finger back next to index finger
