muscles of the thoracic Flashcards

Muscles of the Thorax
- Intrinsic Muscles
2.Extrinsic Muscles
interinsic muscles are divided into
- Intercostals
- Subcostals
- Transverse Thoracis
Extrinsic Muscles are divided into
- Pectoralis Major & Minor,
- Serratus anterior
- Subclavius
These muscles act to change the volume of the thoracic cavity during respiration.
the interinsic
——— lies in the intercostal spaces between ribs. They are divided into three groups, going from superficial to deep:——
-the intra costal of the interinsic muscles
external intercostal
internal intercostal
innermost intercostal
All three groups of muscles support the rib cage. Moreover, they are
all accessory respiratory muscles
the intercostal of the interinsic muscles
are the thin muscles found on the inner surface of the posterior thoracic wall bridging two or three intercostal spaces
SUBCOSTAL muscles
The function ——– muscles is to assist the respiration as well as to support the intercostal spaces and thoracic cage.
the subcostal muscles
is a muscle found on the inner surface of the anterior chest wall. organized into several slips that radiate from the body and xiphoid process of sternum towards the costal cartilages of ribs 2-6.
the transversus thoracic muscles
The function of this muscles is to assist the respiration as well as to support the intercostal spaces and thoracic cage
the transversus muscles
the superior most and largest muscle of the anterior chest wall.
the pectoralis major muscles
Attachment to first seven costal cartilage that lies underneath the
breast tissue.
the pectoralis major
the pectoralis major action is
adduction and internal rotation of the arm on the shoulder joint.
is a muscle of the pectoral region lying deep to and completely covered by the pectoralis major muscle.
the pectoralis minor
a muscle that its Attachment to anterior
surfaces of the 3 rd-5 th ribs
the pectoralis minor
draws scapula antero-inferiorly, stabilizes scapula on thoracic wall.
the pectoralis minor
is a fan-shaped muscle at the lateral wall of the thorax. Its main part lies deep under the scapula and the pectoral muscles.
the serratus anterior
Draws scapula anterolaterally, Suspends scapula on thoracic wall, Rotates scapula (draws inferiorly angle laterally).
the serratus anterior
is small, which is located directly underneath the clavicle, running horizontally.
Subclavius muscle
