musculoskeletal system Flashcards
(34 cards)
1
Q
define tendonitis
A
inflammation of a tendon
2
Q
Tendinosis
A
- degeneration of a tendon (chronic)
3
Q
tenosynovitis
A
inflammation of a sheath of a tendon
- DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis
4
Q
define tendinopathy
A
- disease of a tendon often painful overuse tendon condition
- tendonitis or tendinosis
5
Q
define tremor
A
- involuntary, somewhat rhythmic, muscle movement involving to and fro movements (oscillations) of one or more body parts
6
Q
define spasticity
A
- velocity dependent resistance to muscle stretch
7
Q
define strain
A
trauma to a muscle
8
Q
define arthritis
A
joint inflammation
9
Q
define arthrosis
A
- joint degeneration
10
Q
define arthralgia
A
joint pain
11
Q
define arthropathy
A
disease of the joint
12
Q
define bursitis
A
inflammation of a bursa (shoulder, elbows, knees, hip)
13
Q
Define crepitus
A
- crunching or grating sound/feel
- degenerative bony changes “bone on bone”, inflammation of tendon sheaths
14
Q
define sprain
A
trauma to a ligament
15
Q
Describe Active vs Passive ROM
A
- Active is carried out by patient
- Passive is aided by provider
- Normally, Passive ROM will be greater than active
- Test active ROM first so that ranges of pain and guarding may be observed before passive ROM
16
Q
What is a sign of neurologic weaknes?
A
Smooth weakness
- painless is more indivative of neruologic
- break-away weakness (pain inhibition - it hurts to resist or poor effort is more likely MSK weakness than neuro)
17
Q
C5
A
- Elbow flexion and shoulder ABduction
- Biceps brachii reflex
18
Q
C6
A
- Wrist extension
- brachioradialis reflex
19
Q
C7
A
- Elbow extensors (triceps)
- Triceps reflex
20
Q
C8
A
- Long finger flexors
21
Q
T1
A
- small finger ABductors
–> spread fingers
22
Q
L2
A
Hip flexors
23
Q
L3
A
knee extensors
24
Q
L4
A
Ankle dorsiflexors
- Patellar reflex
25
L5
- Long toe extensors
- Medial hamstring reflex
26
S1
ankle plantar flexors
- achellies reflex
27
Describe the muscle strength grading system
0 = no evidence of movement
1= trace movements
2 = full range of motion with GRAVITY ELIMINATED
3 = full range of motion AGAINST GRAVITY, but NOT AGAINST RESISTANCE
4 = Full range of motion against Gravity and WITH resistance, but weak
5 = full range of motion against gravity, full strength
28
General characteristics of ligament evaluation
- evalulate ligaments with ELONGATING them by PUSHING or PULLING bones they stabilize to assess for partial or complete tears
29
General characteristics of Joint surface evaluation
- Evaluate joint surfaces with RUBBING THEM AGAINST EACH OTHER to assess for PAIN due to trauma/arthritis/degeneration etc
30
General characteristics of Vartilages evaluations
- Evaluate Cartilages (like menisci) by GENTLY SQUEEZING them between BONES or trying to find movements of the menisci that are excessive or limited or painful
31
define trendelenburg sign
- pelvis SAGS DOWNWARD on UNAFFECTED SIDE
32
define Genu valgu and Genu varum
Genu valgum = knocked knee
Genu Varum = bow legged
33
Define ankylosing spondylitis
- chronic inflammatory disease of the spine and sacroiliac joints
- more common in males
- can start to fuse the sacroiliac joints and continue upwards
- Person has a characteristics appearance (hunched forward, head is looking down)
